Gastroscopy

A Gastroscopy involves the passage of a thin, flexible tube with a miniature camera through the mouth which is easily tolerated. The preparation required is Fasting (No food or drink) for 6 hours before the procedure. The tube will be passed after you are sedated ( Anaesthetic) and the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (1st part of small intestine) will be examined. Biopsies will be taken to exclude Coeliac Disease (wheat allergy) or Helicobacter pylori if required.

A Gastroscopy can be used to determine the cause for abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, weight loss or swallowing difficulties.
